Information for Potential Members of UNO Fraternities & Sororities Joining a Greek organization is one of the best ways to get involved at the University of New Orleans. Fraternity and sorority members hold leadership positions in New Student Orientation, Student Government, Student Activities Council, Progressive Black Student Union, UNO Ambassadors, professional organizations, the UNO Honors program, and a variety of honor societies. Up All Night New and continuing students who are interested in joining a fraternity or sorority are encouraged to attend Up All Night Friday, August 28 from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. in the Human Performance Center. Up All Night is a fundraising event with tons of fun activities -- a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, XBOX 360 and Wii competitions, manicures and pedicures, a stroll-off competition featuring our fraternities and sororities -- plus free food and prizes. All proceeds will benefit New Orleans-based charities. The UNO Greek Council is sponsoring Up All Night as a way for those interested in fraternity or sorority membership to experience what Greek Life is all about -- helping others and having fun! Representatives from each Greek organization will be there for you to talk to.
Interfraternity Council (IFC) Recruitment IFC coordinates a recruitment night each fall to introduce interested men to its fraternities (Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Theta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Theta Xi). IFC Recruitment gives potential members the opportunity to meet members of each fraternity. In addition to this event, the individual fraternities will host various recruitment functions during the summer and once school starts. The fraternities decide which recruits they wish to invite into membership, and the recruits will choose which fraternity they wish to join. Inside Fraternity Life: Thursday, September 3 - Alumni Center Ballroom, 6:30 p.m. Meet the members of the 5 IFC fraternities while watching the last Saints preseason game. They'll be playing the Dolphins and we'll have the game up on a big screen. Hang out, get some free food, and see how the Saints starters look. National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Fraternity and Sorority Membership Intake NPHC fraternities and sororities (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.) bring in new members at different times of the year through a process called Membership Intake. Each NPHC group has different requirements for membership, and each conducts intake on its own schedule. More information about the NPHC groups and intake is available on the NPHC page. Several of the NPHC fraternities and sororities will hold interest/invitational/informational meetings or other events for prospective members. (Events will be added as they become available.) Joint Informational Meeting, Tuesday, September 1, Kirschman Hall, 6:30 p.m. None of the NHPC organizations allows first-semester freshmen to join. However, NPHC will host an information session so these students can learn about the general requirements for membership, what they should (and should not!) do in order to express their interest in an NPHC fraternity or sorority, and much more. They will take questions from the audience as well. Attire is business casual.
Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment The Panhellenic sororities (Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha) bring in new members through a process called Membership Recruitment (formerly known as "Rush"). Panhellenic sponsors a Recruitment period each year, during which a series of organized events is held by each sorority. Recruitment
will be held Wednesday, September 9 - Saturday, September 19 Questions? Students or parents with questions about recruitment/intake or Greek Life in general may contact Dr. Pam Rault at 504-280-6636. |
